I served in REME from 12/12/1962, when I passed out of AAS Hadrian's camp to 05 /08/1977, as a Corporal, after 15 years. I was a VM(B)*A1(E). I Was attached to: 6 Coy RASC (GW) Wksps REME, in Wuppertal Following the forming of the RCT, and the loss of transporting Corporal Missiles, we became 6 Sqn RCT Wksp REME. From Wuppertal the Squadron moved to the Airfield at Dortmund, and then on to 4 Div Regt RCT at Duisberg. From 6 Sqn, I moved to !bn. York & Lancaster Regt at North Weald, prior to their disbandment in Dec !968. In Jan 1969 I then was attached to 18 Amph Sqn RCT at Barnstaple, Devon, with their WW2 Ducks. However following a disagreement with the ASM, in August 1969 I was posted to 2 Sqn RCT in Bahrein for 9 Montha ( Memo- L/cpls don't argue with ASMs!!) On returning to UK in May 1970 , I was posted to 17 Sqn RCT wksp REME, in Ripon, Yorks. I 1971 the unit moved to Germany, to be part of 10 Rgt RCT in Bielefeld, from where I did my firt Tour in Belfast with APC Wksps NI., In 1973 I moved to 42 Heavy Regt RA (Wksp REME) with their M109 SP guns in Fallingbostel (or "Effing B" as we called it) In 1975 I moved to Colchester, to be part of 8 Field Wksp REME in McMunn Barracks. As my 15 year option wsa coming up in August 1977, and promotion to Sgt unlikely, I came out. I have lived here in Carlisle since Nov. 1977, but now I am retired.

Hi Fellow I joined Arborfield Holiday Camp in January 64 lat4, moving to greater luxury in Bordon a couple of months later. Played with carburettors and generators for a year and was banished to BAOR for my sins as a VMB(E). Suffered the RASC (15 Company)and it's conversion to RCT (15 Sqn.) at Osnabruck from 65 to 66 when I escaped to 34 Gurkha Transport in Kluang, Malaysia. Don't know what I did wrong but a few months later I was moved up-country to Malacca with 11 Independent Field Squadron RE, in the Commonwealth Brigade, at Terendak Camp. In 67 they flew me up to Thailand, for 6 months, to help the REs build a road. I finally gained my freedom in late 68 with fond memories of my mates but fonder memories of Thailand where I am at present Dec. 2010.

tonystarkey@talktalk.net
1955-1957 I did my basic training at Blandford and then went to Arborfield for training on tank electronics. I rebelled because I thought that it was dangerous to have us studying all day and then having to do drill and barrack cleaning in the evening - dangerous because we were told that if we made a mistake when working on the gun electronics under the counterweight the counterweight could come down and crush us. I thought that if we were only half awake the chance of such an accident was increased so I wrote a letter to the Daily Mirror and subsequently I was hauled up before the C/O and then transferred to Malvern for training as a vehicle electrician from where I was posted to Derna in Libya where I stayed until demob in 1957. I should like to hear from any of the many guys I met during my National Service.

Hello, As today 10/12/10 marks 31 years since the passing of my Dear Brother Paul, whom I miss as Greatly today as I did the day I heard that he had passed as a 14 year old young girl. I am reaching out in the hopes that someone somewhere can remember him and provide me with some stories or memories of him for me, maybe some photographs? He was an AMAZING Mentor for me for as short of a time that I had him in my life he passed away 5 years after I lost my Father, so he became my Father figure as well as my Brother. When he passed I lost SO MUCH. He passed away under strange circumstances in Bielefeld,Germany 10/12/1979,I know that he was R.E.M.E, he was at Arborfield and "passed out" from there, he then went to Germany, he also did tours in Ireland and Belize. I would be absolutely so grateful to hear from anyone who knew him and can contact me with any information. PLEASE

Hi , I am writing this on behalf of Hugh Brock now living in Ireland with his wife Peggy. He was in 7th amoured div from about 1948 to 1958. Although the 7th converted to something else I think. Hugh was also in the Z reserves. He was in Bedafield Germany. I am not sure of the correct spelling of the Bedafield. Hugh grew up around Heathrow Airport. In particular he remembers a Derek Carter. And also someone with the surname Chivers who we believe may have been related to the Chivers Jam company. Thanks for reading.

Hi, I wonder if anybody can give me any information about an inscription on a candlestick I have. The inscription engraved on a brass plaque reads "zur erinnerung an die 11 inf wksp REME German Staff Minden March 1966". I think this translates to "In remberance of the 11 Inf WKSP REME German Staff Minden March 1966". Or possibly "a memento of". It is a very nice large 4 candle arts and crafts style brass and copper hand beaten candlelabra. I bought it from a house clearance sale some years ago near Southampton and thought I'd try and find out about it as it is such a great and well-made item. Many thanks.

Noticed some of the lads are looking for Michael Wisniewski, I recall someone with that name when I was stationed in Germany. I believe due to his classification, (he's was a Control Equipment Technician dealing with missiles)most of his work was Top Secret. Although he repaired my landrover on one occassion(battery fault), I was Airbourne and the first time I met Mike was during training at Catterick in the run-up to the Falklands.

I was one of the last National Servicemen, joining REME in 1960 as part of intake 60/10 at no 1 Training Batallion at Blandford. I was sent to no 9 platoon A company under Corporal/ Sergeant Derricut. The next stop was Depot where we learned to use an SLR, Sterling and Bren gun. In October I went to Aden and was posted to the Independent Armoured Squadron Workshop in Little Aden [Falaise Camp]. The next excitement is that we were rushed up to Kuwait to help repel a threatened invasion by Iraq which included the gaff of arriving at RAF Khormakser without our rifles and someone was sent back to camp to get them all. I wasn't long in Kuwait as I contrived to cut my thumb on a rusty screw which went septic and I was casevacked first to Bahrein and then to Aden where I spent a very enjoyable two months on the balcony at Steamer Point Hospital while they put my thumb right. Wounds do not heal in Aden so after six weeks it was realised my thumb would not buck the trend, I was again casevacked, this time to the UK and the Royal Herbert Hospital at Woolwich. After this I went to the LAD at 24 Signals at Catterick and finished my time there. If anybody has them, I would love to have some photographs of the Falaise Camp as all my luggage failed to arrive in the UK when I came home. Bob Farmer

Bill Leppard served in the REME during WW2. He celebrated his 30th birthday on D Day. He remembers being transported in a collier and that when the guns started firing he says every grain of coal dust was dislodged and covered them! Now at 93 years of age he wants to contact 'Jock' Horne of the 27th Armoured Brigade who came from Stirling, Scotland - Dad describes Jock as not very tall, played the harmonica and a polite man. Any information would be much appreciated.

Bernard died some time ago and his sister has contacted me and would like copies, but I have lost Ken's address. His widow (I believe) lives in the Bengeo area of Hertford. Any info appreciated
